Understanding of the rubrics:

There are subtle differences in similar sounding rubrics and one must understand   these well in order to apply these effectively e.g., Careful, Cautious and Anxiously Cautious are distinguished as

CAREFUL : One can be careful while doing something.

CAUTIOUS : Cautious before the event arrives.

ANXIOUSLY CAUTIOUS : When feeling concerned enough to know the cause so as to avoid errors on his part.

Applying the Rubrics

R. H. is a novel and unique way of using and interpreting rubrics, e.g., generally, we know the meaning of the word "Extravagance" as belonging to monetary affairs. R. H. takes his one step further and uses this rubric to mean an excess of anything. If a patient expresses that he has been waiting for many days, and there has been no relief and says, "How much longer shall I wait, only there is a limit to how much I can put up with". This statement can then be interpreted as FEAR OF EXTRAVAGANCE. Over the year Dr. Sehgal cured many cases using  this rubric and others to support a prescription of Opium.

To give another example, a patient may say I have an ear infection. Can you do something for me straight away. Here the rubric would be CARRIED, DESIRE TO BE FAST. The patient wants someone to do something for him and wants quick relief. This is an example of metaphoric interpretation of the rubrics that has made Dr. Sehgal's method so popular. Dr. Rajan Sankaran exemplifies this method in his book Spirit of Homeopathy.

The practical approach

CASE 1 :     Before the administration of the remedy thoughts of a patient, suffering from earache, were:

  1. "The night is approaching and if the earache gets worse, there should be some arrangement for an alternative, so that if the need arise, I can look after myself properly."

  2. "If no such arrangement were made, the other people in the house might be inconvenienced."

The third consideration was, while he was talking he was laughing, as if he was not very serious about it.

One the above mental state rubrics chosen were:

Careful

Anxiety, others, for

Frivolous

THE MEDICINE chosen was: Baryta Carb 30, 3 doses after 15 minutes interval.

After the medicine chosen was administered, first of all the foregoing three mental symptoms on which the prescription was based normalised. Thereafter a thin watery discharge from the nose started with a corresponding relief in the earache.

In the example given above the medicine was prescribed on the basis of common but present, predominating and persisting symptoms of the mind. Thereafter the mental symptoms were balanced and nasal discharge started and ultimately healing in the particular organ (ear) took place.

CASE 2: A six month old child, would suck the mother's  nipple, stop in between as if exhausted, resting his head on his mother's breast and raise his head again after sometime to feed himself. The mother simply complained, "The child doesn't fill his belly well and refuses to take anything except breastfeed. This is almost since birth the child does not feed fully and will only be breastfed."

In this case the previous treatments of all kinds failed. China off. cleared this case on rubric: DULLNESS,sluggishness, difficulty of thinking and comprehending, torpor periodical.

Learning the method:

A series of seminars are held in the UK and mainland Europe delivered by Dr. Sanjay Sehgal(45) and Dr. Yogesh Sehgal(38) who are both sons and devoted students of Dr. M. L. Sehgal. Dr. Sanjay Sehgal did his D.H.M.S. in 1977, from Nehru Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital (Delhi). He is the member of Scientific Advisory Committee, Delhi Homoeopathic Anusandhan Parishad, Ministry of Health, Govt. of India.

Dr. Sanjay Sehgal, Dr. M.L. Sehgal, Dr. Yogesh Sehgal

Dr. Yogesh Sehgal did his D.H.M.S. is 1987, from Medical College & Hospital (Chandigarh). Both are staunch followers of the Sehgal Method from day one of their practice. They helped Dr. Sehgal to organise seminars and teaching schedules in India, Holland, Germany & London. They accompanied him on all his lectures and teaching schedules. Since 1994 they have been teaching his technique mostly in Europe (Germany,Czech, Slovakia, Switzerland,London)

Although both of them have their own clinics, they compliment each other in their teaching assignments. Both of them are co-authors of Perfect and Roh series IX Meteria Medical.

Both of them appeared in the British Society of Homoeopathy's journal and
were interviewed by Dr. Nick
Church Hill They are also registered with the British Register of Complementary Practitioners to practice in this country.
